2008 APPLICATION TIMETABLE
March 1: The selection committee will begin accepting applications
April 15: Deadline for submitting applications. All applications must be time-stamped on 4/15/2008. No applications will accepted after this date.
May 7: Finalists will be contacted and interviews will be scheduled.
May 17: Finalists and their parents/legal guardians will be interviewed.
July 1: 2008 recipient will be announced.
2008 APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The '86 GSB Endowment Scholarship selection committee is committed to maintaining a diverse student body at Boylan. Accordingly, we welcome applications from students of all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. The selection process is made on the basis of a candidate's individual talent, potential, and ability to positively contribute to the Boylan community.
The application will consist of the following:
1. A completed personal information form (online below)
2. 4 completed essays (online below)
3. A letter of recommendation completed by a current teacher
4. A completed parent statement (online below)
5. Finalists will be required to attend an on campus interview (All candidates must be accompanied by a parent/guardian)
6. A completed financial aid application available at Boylan's main office.

II. Essays
Please answer the mandatory question from Group 1 and one question from each of the groups 2 - 4. A total of four essays must be completed. Please make sure your answers are clear and concise. You may want to compose and save your answers to a word document and then copy and paste the text to the boxes below.
IMPORTANT: In groups 2-4, please be sure to list the number of the question you are answering along with your response in the appropriate box below.
Essay Questions: Group 1
Please answer the following mandatory question regarding your aptitude and goals:
Why do you want to attend Boylan? In answering this question, please discuss any special accomplishments, attributes, or talents that set you apart from your classmates. Also, describe what makes you a good leader and how you have demonstrated these leadership qualities in and out of school.
Please answer in two or three paragraphs.
Essay Questions: Group 2
Please answer one (1) of the following three (3) questions regarding faith:
1. This quote is on display at Boylan’s two main entrances:
“Be it known to all who enter here that Christ is the reason for this school. He is the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes. He is the model of its faculty and the inspiration of its students.”
React to this quote in two or three paragraphs.
2. Pretending that you have just graduated from Boylan and are looking back over your four years, who have you become in terms of your personal faith? How do Church teachings, service, and worship impact your life? What virtues have become habits in your daily life?
React in two or three paragraphs.
3. Boylan Catholic High School has been recognized three times by the United States Department of Education as an Exemplary School. This is one of the nation’s highest awards a school can receive.
In two or three paragraphs, discuss a) what you expect from a Boylan education and b) how you expect Boylan to be different from other high schools in the city.
Essay Questions: Group 3
Please answer one (1) of the following two (2) questions regarding service:
1. Each year, the Alumni Association recognizes a grad with the Veritas Award. Veritas means “truth” in Latin.
In two or three paragraphs, connect why you think a graduate would receive this award with the word “truth”.
2) Social justice is an important area of Church teaching.
In two or three paragraphs, explain what you understand by “social justice” using these terms: commitment, global, hospitality, selfish, stranger.
Essay Questions: Group 4
Please answer one (1) of the following three (3) questions regarding general topics:
1. What is your favorite book and what lessons has it taught you?
2. What current events are of particular interest to you and why?
3. What additional information about you would assist the selection committee in making their decision?
Please answer this question in one (1) concise paragraph.
III. Letter of Recommendation
Please refer a current teacher to GSB86@RCN.COM so that he/she can email a letter of recommendation. Please also ensure that your teacher types your full name in the subject heading.
To the Teacher: Please email an evaluation detailing the applicant's academic and personal strengths and weaknesses. It would also be helpful to comment on the applicant's skill in math and English and to include how long you have known him or her. Please send the final version in word format.
IV. Parent Statement
To the parent or guardian: Please answer each of the following questions (in a paragraph or two in total) .
1. How would you describe your child?
2. Describe some adversity your child has encountered. How did he/she overcome this adversity and how would you evaluate this process? What would you have expected differently?
3. How do you envision your child growing and learning at Boylan? What expectations do you hold for your child beyond Boylan?
