Jordan Calgaro, class of 2009, has returned to the White House to once again help with their Christmas decorations. Jordan has emailed us the following account:

After having the honor of being accepted to decorate the White House in 2010, I was eager to reapply in hopes to relive the experience once more. My letter to First Lady Michelle Obama was sent January 1, and it wasn’t until October that I received a reply from Jeremy Bernard, the Social Secretary, inviting me back this holiday season. I was one of about ten volunteers who returned from last year, along with 120 new volunteers from around the country.

This year, I was chosen to decorate the West Wing along with about five other volunteers. While the rest of the group was working in the support facility the day before we began decorating, I arrived at the White House before dawn to get started in the West Wing. It was an honor last year to be working in such historic rooms, but this year, having the opportunity to decorate the Oval Office, Cabinet Room, and other rooms of such importance in the West Wing was really something special.

When the West Wing was finished, I returned to my team on the State Floor of the White House. As the lead of all of the decorations in the Grand Foyer, I was kept busy for the next three days. With the strict deadline drawing close, I was called to help finish up decorations in various rooms, and when the Green Room decorations were scrapped at the very last minute, I was called upon to finish that as well.

Despite my new and exciting opportunities this year, I am still in awe of the beauty of the house and experience overall. I am thankful for having the chance to return to such an historic place and to use my talents to make the White House beautiful for not only the First family, but for the 85,000 visitors expected to see the house this season.

One of the major goals of Boylan’s English Department is to improve student writing through direct instruction and ample practice. To facilitate this goal, English teachers began keeping writing portfolios for all students. The portfolios contain at least one student writing sample for each grade year: literary analysis-freshman year, research paper-sophomore year, persuasive essay-junior year, and problem/solution paper if student took Senior Composition. These portfolios enable English teachers to identify and address specific writing weaknesses, to track a student’s progress over time, and to develop a comprehensive writing program. Our current seniors, the inaugural group, will receive their portfolios at the end of first semester with one exception: Advanced Placement Language and Composition students who will receive their portfolios at the end of the second semester.
