Mitchell Faulk Honored By Chicago Tribune

Mitchell Faulk, the valedictorian of the class of 2010, has been named as a finalist in the Chicago Tribune All-State Academic Team.

Panels of educators and citizens involved in education served as judges for the 265 nominations the Tribune received for this year’s scholarships. The judges evaluated the entrants’ grades, test scores and other accomplishments. Mitchell was chosen as one of the seventy finalists from which 10 scholarship winners were selected.

Andrew Chang to Perform at “Young Steinway” Concert Series

Andrew Chang, a freshman at Boylan, will be performing in the Young Steinway Concert Series presented by the Skokie Public Library on March 7. Andrew has been studying piano since age seven. He currently studies with Soo Young Lee at the Music Institute of Chicago. Andrew won first place in the junior division of the 2009 Chandler Starr Miller Scholarship Competition and was chosen to perform with Alan Goldstein at the Coronado Theatre. Mitchell Faulk Named to IHSA All-State Academic Team

Boylan Catholic High School senior, Mitchell Faulk, has been named to the 17th IHSA All-State Academic Team, sponsored by Caterpillar. Nearly 500 nominations were received from IHSA member schools. Mitchell was one of 26 students selected by a committee of high school administrators. Students were selected based on academic achievement, athletic achievement, and outstanding citizenship.

The IHSA All-State Academic Team will be honored at a banquet at The Double Tree Hotel in Bloomington on Monday, April 19.

Mitchell Faulk joins Erin Filak as Boylan students selected to the IHSA All-State Academic Team. Erin is a member of the 2007 team.

Mitchell Faulk and Grace Parsons Named National Merit Finalists

Mitchell Faulk and Grace Parsons have advanced to Finalist standing in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Mitchell and Grace are among less than one percent of U.S. high school graduating seniors who have earned this honor.

Finalists are being considered for one of three types of scholarships: the $2,500 single-payment National Merit Scholarships; or�one of about 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships; or one of over 4,700 college-sponsored Merit Scholarships.

Octaves to Perform at Ice Hogs Game

Concert Choir to Perform With Millikin University

Miss Melissa Mecadon our choral teacher has announced today that tomorrow evening�, January 14, 2010, �our Concert Choir will be singing a concert with the Millikin University Chamber Chorale at the First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle. We’re the “opening act”.
Millikin University Chamber Choral is a select mixed ensemble exploring all forms of choral music from five centuries of standard repertoire.� The choir tours annually throughout the midwest.� In February the choir will perform for the Regional Conference of the American Choral Director’s Association, one of seven college choirs from a five state area to be invited. I am very excited about this opportunity because this is the choir I sang in while at Millikin AND because our Concert Choir will be singing a piece written by the director of the MU choir, Dr. Guy Forbes.
So if you’re not busy and you would like to trek to Rochelle – our concert starts at 7:30 (I would try to get there a little early for seating) It is free and open to the public.

Music Students Honored

In mid-October 32 students auditioned for District and All State bands and choirs. Students, through a private audition, were scored on how well they prepared two pieces of music (chosen the day of auditions out of multiple pieces learned). Students were also scored on sight-reading, rhythm skills, and tone quality. Of the 32 students, 15 were chosen to participate in the All-District Music Festival held at Northern Illinois University on November 20. One student auditioned and was chosen for the District Jazz Festival held at Hononegah High School on November 14. At the district festivals, students were able to work under Â directors from the state of Illinois and perform with the top students from our region of the state. Freshmen and Sophomores may qualify for the District Festival but not All State. Based on this, as well as attendance at District Festival and the scores from their initial audition, five students were chosen to sing in the All-State Honors Choir and two were chosen to sing in the All-State Choir. One student was chosen, by teacher recommendation and written essay, to participate in the Future Music Educators Conference. He will learn what it is like to be a music teacher and will participate in the same sessions and conference meetings that the music teachers experience while at the All-State Conference in Peoria held during the last week of January. Only 45 students from the state are chosen to participate in the Future Music Ed. Conference. Students participating in All-State choirs will work with well known musicians and directors from around the Nation and present a concert at the end of the three day event. Students will be performing with the top high school aged musicians in the state.

Students who participated in the District Music Festival included Mary Cate Cichock, Lauren Furgiuele, Andrew Gaffney, Julia Gomulka,Tony Gracyalny, Caroline Mangiardi, Matthew Olmstead, Danielle Phelps, Kevin Potts, Emily Rogers, CJ Scalise, Daniel Walls, Laura Hayes, and Greg Clough.

Students named to the All State Honors Choir include Lauren Furgiuele, Tony Gracyalny, Kevin Potts, CJ Scalise, and Matt Olmstead.

Students named to the All State Choir include Danielle Phelps and Julia Gomulka.

The All State Future Music Educator is Michael Day.

National Merit Scholarship Program Names Commended Students

Congratulations to the following Boylan students who have been honored as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Competition: David Bohn, Luke Carlson, Mason Faulk, Kieran Jansen, Barrett Kroll, Patrick Morrison, Kevin Potts, Christian Provenza, and Austin Walsh.

Although Commended Students will not continue in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships, they have placed among the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October at Boylan.

According to a spokesperson for NMSC, “As demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program, the young men and women named Commended Students represent some of the most academically talented students in our country.”

Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

Congratulations to Mitchell Faulk and Grace Parsons who have been recognized as Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.

More than 1.5 million juniors entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in October of last year.

The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which�represents less than 1% of the U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

Approximately 15,000 Semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Boylan juniors will take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test on Wednesday, October 14, 2009.

Ryan Knodle Honored as a Golden Apple Scholar

Ryan Knodle has been named as a Golden Apple Scholar of the Illinois Class of 2009.

The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois is a highly competitive program that seeks the best and brightest of Illinois youth interested in a teaching career. Those selected receive advanced teacher preparation through Summer Institutes that give them early practice and exposure to the art of teaching and financial assistance for college. Over 1850 nominations were received this year.

Ryan will be recognized at a reception on Saturday, May 2 at the DePaul University Lincoln Park Campus.

Students Excell at Illinois Science Olympiad

Congratulations to the following students for their outstanding performances at the Illinois Science Olympiad Regional held at Rock Valley College.

Ryan Loos placed first in “Cell Biology”, “Chemistry Lab”, and “Dynamic Planet” and fourth in “Physics Lab”.

Craig Cahillane who placed first in “Chemistry Lab”, third place in “Egg-O-Naut” and fourth in “Physics Lab”.

Zach Smith Captures State Title

Congratulations to junior Zach Smith who was crowned the class 3A State wrestling champion at 215 pounds. Zach is the first Boylan student to win a State wrestling title. Zach will be recognized at the all-school assembly following the Ash Wednesday mass.
