Q: What does it mean to be enrolled in the Google Chrome Management System?

A:

  • Boylan can ensure that the Chromebook's operating system is up to date.

  • Boylan and parents/guardians can ensure that the device is being used for school work while at school.

  • The Google Management System allows Boylan to set restrictions such as:

  • Limiting who can log in to the Chromebook upon bootup: while enrolled, only @students.boylan.org accounts can log in. However, students can log in to personal accounts via websites.

  • Limiting installation of Android Applications approved for educational use

  • Re-enrolling a student’s Chromebook in the management system even if the Chromebook is restored to factory settings.

  • The Google Chrome Management System allows Boylan to remotely push out:

  • WiFi networks dedicated to student Chromebooks and other network resources.

  • Applications for educational use.

Q: When will my student have open access to her/his Chromebook?

A:

  • When a student graduates or if they withdraw from Boylan and once fees and tuition are paid in full, his/her Chromebook will be removed from Boylan’s Google Chrome Management System (deprovisioned);

Q: Do I need to bring my Chromebook every day?

A:

  • Yes, students are required to bring their Chromebook each day, fully charged.

Q: Is technical support available?

A:

Tech support will be available to students during normal school hours (8 AM – 3 PM). Boylan's support will not be available for 24/7 service. Students/Families are encouraged to bring their Boylan Chromebook to the Tech department first for any needed assistance.

After reviewing your Chromebook, appropriate action will be determined; both student and parents will be notified if further action is required.

Boylan will have a small inventory of older Chromebooks that can be loaned to students on a short-term basis. Damage to devices will need to be repaired in a timely manner by the family at their own expense.

Q: What do I need when I come in for support?

A:

  • In addition to your Chromebook, please bring your power cord.

Q: How do I properly care for the Chromebook Battery?

A:

  • Please note that all rechargeable batteries inherently have a limited number of charge cycles. The way in which your battery is used; including but not limited to the number and frequency of charges/discharges; and how it is stored day-to-day and long term - affects the life of rechargeable batteries;

  • Please visit Acer's Website for specific information about the warranty included on the battery.

  • It is recommended that you do not store the Chromebook in extreme heat (car in the summer) or
    extreme cold (in the winter) for extended periods of time;

  • Users should not charge high drain devices (e.g. cell-phones) from the Chromebook's USB ports;

  • If the Chromebook will not be used for an extended period of time (one week or more - e.g. holiday breaks), it is recommended to properly configure the Chromebook into a "battery disconnect state" to preserve the battery (follow the instructions here).

Q: How do I purchase a replacement battery?

A:

  • Yes. Boylan Catholic can order a replacement battery for your Chromebook. The cost varies, please contact the Tech Department for current pricing.

Q: Is insurance or are extended warranties available?

A:

  • Boylan will not provide insurance or extended warranties for these devices;

  • Parents are encouraged but not expected to purchase insurance or extended warranties and/or other protection for their student’s device;

  • For warranty information please visit Acer's Website click on "View extended warranty options" then enter the serial number of your child's Chromebook.

  • The purchase date for the 2018-19 model is August 8, 2018

  • The purchase date for the 2019-20 model is August 16, 2019

Q: Will there be a protection plan if the Chromebooks are damaged?

A:

Some students are harder on devices than others. For that reason, we are leaving the extra cost of insuring the device up to the parent or guardian of the student. Boylan does not endorse any one insurance company. It has been brought to our attention that some homeowners/renters policies have coverage. You will want to check yours. It has come to our attention that some insurance providers need to know that the family owns the device, that it is required daily for school, and travels back and forth between the home and school.

Q: How do I properly care for my Chromebook charger / power cord / power adapter?

A:

  • It is recommended that you always remove the cable from your Chromebook from the plastic strain relief, not the cable itself. Pulling from the cable will damage the cable;

  • Users should refrain from bending and twisting the cable beyond the natural coil of the cable;

  • Cables that are damaged or frayed should never be used. Damaged chargers / power cords / power adapters should be replaced;

  • It is recommended that you utilize an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) charger to charge your Chromebook;

  • Aftermarket (3rd party) chargers may not provide the proper wattage needed to adequately power the Chromebook and/or charge the battery properly. Warning messages will appear near the battery indicator stating if there is insufficient power.

  • Never use a cellphone charger to charge your Chromebook;

  • Users should charge their Chromebooks at night for a complete charge so that their Chromebook will work for an entire school day.

Q: Where can I get a replacement USB-C charger / power cord / power adapter? (2018-19 & 2019-20 models)

A:

Q: Can I use a 3rd party USB-C power cord / charger / power adapter to charge my Chromebook?

  • Never use a cellphone charger to charge your Chromebook.

Q: How do I properly care for the Chromebook hinges?

A:

  • Users should always open and close the Chromebook from the center of the display near the LCD camera;

  • To adjust the angle of the screen, adjust the screen from the center of the display near the LCD camera, never from the sides;

  • Favoring a single side when opening or adjusting the screen will add unnecessary stress and 'wear-and-tear' on the favored hinge.

Q: How long will Google provide updates for my Chromebook?

A:

  • Google has an "Auto Update Policy" for all Chrome devices, in which Chromebooks will receive regular software updates until the device reaches its "Auto Update Expiration" date (AUE). When a device reaches this date, the device is still usable, however, it will no longer receive software updates which may include security updates from Google. Users should exercise caution when using devices past the AUE date.
  • You can check Google's website for any Chrome device (Chromebook, Chromebox, Chromebase, Chromebit, etc.) that is supported by the Auto Update Expiration (AUE) policy by visiting their site and finding your model by brand. Please note that the AUE date may change if Google extends support beyond what is originally listed.
  • As of 02/24/2020, the 2018-2019 Boylan Model (R751TN-C5P3-US) has an AUE date of June 2024
  • As of 02/24/2020, the 2019-2020 Boylan Model (R851TN-C9DD-US) has an AUE date of June 2026
