Nicholas Mirza, 14 of Winnebago, IL has recently earned his Eagle Scout Award – the highest advancement award in Boy Scouts.
Nicholas has been a dedicated member of the Boy Scouts of America since second grade. As a Webelos, he earned the Super Achiever award for earning all the activity pins and collecting over 40 belt slides. In less than a year, he was on his way to becoming a First Class Scout. He currently has earned over 60 merit badges, the Mile Swim Patch, and 3 religious awards: Light of Christ, Parvuli Dei, and Ad Altare Dei. He has held the positions of Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, and Librarian. He attended National Youth Leadership Training, and was elected by his peers to join the National Honor Society of Scouts – Order of the Arrow.
For his service project, Nicholas built an information kiosk at the Westlake Village Wetlands, built bird, butterfly, and bat houses and mounted them around the wetlands. He placed rip-rap to repair the erosion around the lagoon bridge embankment and walked the trails removing litter and invasive Garlic Mustard.
Nicholas’ Multi-tiered Conservation Project qualifies him for consideration as a recipient of the Hornaday Award, which recognizes Boy Scouts who have made significant contributions to conservation.
Nicholas is the brother of Zachary Mirza (Eagle Scout), and son to Drs. Catherine Baer-Mirza and Razvan Mirza.

The Boylan Community is saddened by the death of Mr. Dennis Hiemenz on Tuesday, December 27, 2016.
Mr. Hiemenz began his forty-eight year career at Boylan in 1965 as an English teacher. Throughout his time teaching at Boylan, he taught a variety of courses from journalism to the humanities. In the early 1990s, he began transitioning into administration. Here he began working as the Assistant Principal for Academics. He was instrumental in the school’s academic achievement awards and in the development of the school’s technological plan. He will be a missed member of our Boylan family.
