National Merit Finalists

The National Merit Scholarship Program has determined which of the Semifinalists named last September have met the requirements to advance to Finalist standing. Two Boylan seniors, Grant Anderson and Anders Pauley have been named, and will now compete for Merit Scholarship awards.

Of the 16,000 Semifinalists named last September, about 90% have become Finalists. The selection of some 8,200 Merit Scholarship winners is now in progress.

Boylan Hosts Afterglo ‘06

Boylan Catholic high School invites you to attend “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, its 17th annual Afterglo, on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at Giovanni’s. The dinner dance/auction will begin at 6:30 with cocktails and Auction Review.

Among the items up for bid are tickets to the Chicago production of Wicked with hotel accommodations and dinner, a full-size, framed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie poster and script, both signed by Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, a full day of meetings and lunch with Mayor Larry Morrissey for one lucky student, as well as a party for 10 by a professional chocolatier, a satellite car radio, Cubs and White Sox tickets, and passes to local attractions. Dance music provided by Clutch Cargo. Proceeds will be used to reduce debt on the Arts and Sciences Complex.

The public, especially alumni, are invited. Cost is $55 per person. For reservations, call Jody at 885-4752 or Chris at 282-3834 by March 17.

Boylan Students Excel

Boylan Catholic High School’s Math team enjoyed success in a 10-school competition at Hononegah High School recently.  The Frosh/Soph 8-person team (Alexis Onderak, Eric Anderson, Michaleen Ward, Joe May, Dan Dansdill, Cathryn Vaulman, Zak Schmitt, and Erika Olsen) finished first.  The 8-person Jr./Sr. team (Anders Pauley, Michele Kruse, Brandon Stoffregen, Ben Schmitt, and Regina deGuzman) came in second.  Individually, in the Algebra I contest, Eric Anderson finished second, and Ryan Loos finished sixth.

Boylan’s German students were among 25,000 students nationally who participated in the American Association of Teachers of German National Testing and Awards Program this year. Boylan students scored on or above the 85th percentile, with Vanja Cosic scoring in the 96th percentile, qualifying her for a study abroad opportunity.

Boylan Spring Musical

Boylan Catholic High School’s Theater Department presents Lerner and Loewe’s "Camelot" Friday, April 7 through Sunday, April 9, 2006 in the school auditorium. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2:00 p.m. Sunday. All reserved seats are $8.

Boylan Sponsors Academic Bowl

Boylan Catholic High School will host one of 13 regional tournaments for the 23rd Annual Illinois Masonic Academic Bowl on Saturday, February 18, 2006, starting at 8:15 a.m. at the school.

16 high schools will compete at Boylan in this double elimination tournament with a consolation bracket, guaranteeing each team at least two matches. The Masons of Illinois grant scholastic monetary awards to those schools finishing in the top five places at each of the 13 regional sites. The Regional Champion from each site will advance to the Masonic Academic Bowl State Tournament at Springfield Southeast High School on Saturday, March 4.

Competing high schools pay no entry fees, as the cost of the tournament is funded by the Masons of Illinois. The competition is open to the public; admission is free.

Boylan Science Teacher Honored

Boylan Catholic High School Science teacher Larry McPheron has been named Environmental Educator of the Year by the Winnebago County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was cited for involving his classes in a variety of extracurricular activities including the Illinois Envirothon Competition, his assistance with the Youth Groundwater Festival, and his involvement with groups and organizations which promote environmental awareness. The award was presented at the organization’s annual meeting on January 27 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pecatonica.
