Students who demonstrate outstanding performance in scholarship, leadership, service and character are selected by a faculty committee. Members participate in a variety of service projects for the school and the community.

Bylaws of the Boylan Chapter:
I. Selection Process
Students with G.P.A. 3.5 or better will be invited to attend a MANDATORY meeting in which the NHS selection process and membership responsibilities will be described by the adviser. Interested students will be asked to fill out a Student Activity Form and submit five copies to the adviser by the assigned date. Students not turning in the forms by the assigned date will be removed from the candidate list.
The eligible students will be rated in the areas of leadership, character, and service by the Boylan Faculty.
A five person faculty committee, appointed by the Principal and remaining anonymous, will determine membership.
The committee will consider the following when determining membership
Faculty ratings as averaged by adviser
Student Activity Form completed by student
School attendance
Demerits
A student will be selected a member of NHS if 3 of the 5 faculty members approve the student
II. Officer Selection
Selection of the chapter's officers will take place at the first meeting in the fall. After hearing a description of the responsibilities of each officer the members will nominate their peers for office beginning with president. Three nominations will be accepted and then a secret ballot will take place with the president being the person with the most votes. Other officers will be elected in the same manner in the following order: Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer.
The duties and responsibilities of each officer is as follows:
President:
In cooperation with the adviser established the agenda prior to each meeting at an officers meeting
Opens each meeting with the NHS Pledge followed by a prayer.
Runs the meeting in an orderly fashion according to the pre established agenda
Is responsible for all members participating in service projects for the school and community
Follows up on all appointments to insure tasks are being accomplished
Serves as the official representative of the group to other organizations and other school administration.
Serves as Master of Ceremonies for the induction ceremony
Vice President:
Aids in the development of the agenda at the officers meeting
Takes over the President when needed
Coordinated the work of all committees
Responsible for the compilation of the chapter scrap book
Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the adviser or President
Secretary:
In cooperation with the treasurer addresses the meeting notices to members at the officers meeting
Keeps the minutes of the meeting
Reports, files and answers all correspondence.
Keeps an accurate report of attendance at each meeting
Treasurer:
In cooperation with the secretary addresses the meeting notices to members at the officers meeting
Keeps an accurate record of all members service hours in the areas of Boylan, Community hours, and Tutoring hours.
Keeps an accurate record of any funds collected or spent
III. With membership in the National Honor Society comes responsibility. Member in NHS will be expected to do the following:
Attend all meetings. If an unavoidable conflict occurs the member will discuss his/her absence with the adviser promptly.
Tutor Boylan students if requested by the advisor. This may include giving up study hall or spending time before or after school to help in the Boylan Resource Center.
Help organize, set up and clean up for the Father/Daughter or Mother/Son Dance as designated by the adviser.
Participate in school and community service projects selected by the chapter. Service hours will be tallied in the categories of Boylan hours, community hours, and tutoring hours. Service hours will not include hours accomplished during the summer or hours for which a grade or pay is given.
Continue areas of involvement that meet the criteria of leadership, character and service.
IV. If a member fails to meet these responsibilities he/she will be asked to submit a letter of resignation. If a member refuses to resign the advisor will present in writing to the member and the Faculty Committee rationale for dismissal. The student will be given the opportunity to respond in writing to the Faculty Committee. Based on the adviser's written reasons for the dismissal and the student's response the faculty committee will vote. A vote of 3 of the 5 members in favor of dismissal will result in the official dismissal of the student from the National Honor Society. At no time will the anonymity of the faculty committee be compromised.
